Rachid Méziane, coach of the Connecticut Sun, has indicated that there are “no contraindications” for Leïla Lacan to participate in the World Cup with the French national team. He acknowledged the demanding schedule for the 22-year-old player and emphasized the importance of her rest and recovery.

Méziane stated, “We will allow her to rest a bit because the consecutive play hasn’t been easy. The idea is for her to arrive with some freshness, so that’s why after her season in France, we will be cautious. I’ve already spoken with Leïla about this; she will benefit from a good week of rest, also to be able to disconnect, before getting on a plane and rejoining us.”

Leïla Lacan, who has been named MVP of the Wonderligue and best young player of the Euroleague, is set to take on a more prominent role with the Connecticut Sun. Méziane explained, “Last year, she adapted very, very quickly, so if this year it can be at least the same, or even faster, it will be beneficial for everyone. She will have a status to assume. We expect her to have the role of a starting point guard. Last year, she didn’t arrive with that label, due to her late arrival after the European championship. But this year, she arrives as a starter, at least that’s how I presented things to the entire squad. We have also built the squad with this parameter in mind. She is becoming a leader.”

The Landaise player is anticipated to join the French team for the World Cup in Berlin from September 4th to 13th. The exact timing of her release by her WNBA franchise remains uncertain. Méziane clarified, “To date, there are no contraindications for her to participate in the World Cup with the French team. The question mark is the moment she will join the team.” He also noted that “nothing has been finalized yet” with the French coach, Jean-Aimé Toupane. “Depending on how things go here, how she feels, we will need to make the right decisions for everyone. But we always encourage our young players to go to the highest level. And we cannot prevent a player from proudly wearing the jersey of her national team.”
